CHAPTER FIVE
hold still
The way Henry's eyes widen is hilarious, but I bite my lip and stare up at him. He turns and gestures to his pals, and they walk away, deep into the ballroom. Henry looks down at me.
"We have a plan. Stay here while we finish some things. Get a drink or something. Pete will find you and bring you back secretly," He assures me, his voice carrying a sense of confidence I can't help but trust.
I nod in agreement, and he reciprocates the gesture. He twists and moves to catch up with his two henchmen, who've disappeared as they weave through the crowd. I lose sight of them as the trio goes deeper into the hotel ballroom. I'm thirsty and need a drink, but I don't want alcohol. I want to keep my wits about me.
Moving through the mingling people, I smile at some familiar faces. I've only worked at the bank for a few months and have few friends. Clutching my handbag under my arm, I grab a small dish and add some of the starters arrayed down the banquet line. By the time I've filled half my plate, I'm at the drink line. When I ask for water, the bartender scoops ice in a glass and fills it from the tap.
I find a table and sit quietly. I'm fidgeting near the entrance, snacking from my selection of grapes, carrot sticks, and charcuterie. The cold water soothes my dry mouth, but my palms are sweaty. People are still arriving, and a steady stream passes me, heading toward groups sitting at the banquet tables. I'm okay with being alone; I don't trust myself too much regarding small talk.
I sense a shadowy figure, and I twist around. Pete crosses his arms over his massive chest and holds up one hand. "Hello, lady."
A person wearing black passes behind my large coworker, but I don't register more than his shadow as I wave back. "Hullo."
"Come with me, lady." Pete offers his hand. I take it, and my tiny hand disappears when his fist envelops it. With a gentle tug, he pulls me to my feet. "I'll carry you if I must."
"Thank you. Very gallant," I say with some sass. "I can walk myself."
He laughs a low rumble but doesn't let go of my hand. Together, we head toward the back of the ballroom and turn down an empty hallway, passing the guest restrooms. We continue down the empty hall with Pete holding my hand in his massive grip. It's comforting because I trust him; despite his friends, he's always been polite. It grows quieter and darker the further we go until double doors appear under a single light at the end of the corridor.
Pete sweeps his hand past as he opens the door, standing to the side and allowing enough room for me to pass by him. The room is dark, with eerie columns of stacked chairs, folding tables, and partitions filling it. When the door shuts, he turns the lock with a click.
